According to The Pulse Of Radio, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS have tapped actress Olivia Wilde to direct the music video for "Dark Necessities", the first single from the band's upcoming eleventh studio album, "The Getaway". Wilde made it public earlier this week that she was getting behind the camera for the clip, posting a series of photos from the shoot on her Instagram account. In one, she joked about hiding her pregnancy on set, while in another she wrote, "Chad Smith tearing up this crazy kit last night after I asked him to play at double the normal speed. #holys**t #hero #videoshoot #directorheaven @chilipeppers."
Wilde's only previous directing credit is a short film called "Free Hugs". Her acting resume includes roles on the TV series "Vinyl", "House" and "The O.C.", while her film credits include "The Lazarus Effect", "Her", "Tron: Legacy", "Rush", "The Change-Up", "Cowboys And Aliens" and many more.
CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea told The Pulse Of Radio that "Dark Necessities" almost didn't become the first single. "I mean, I knew that was a good song," he said. "There was another one that was gonna be the first single and then we… Like, we already told the record company, 'Okay, we're gonna do this one,' and then we changed our mind and went to 'Dark Necessities'. But I'm glad we went with it. What I like about this record is that every song really occupies its own space, the songs don't repeat themselves, and that one was a great song. It's dynamic and it just feels great to play, you know. It has a real pull to it."
"The Getaway" will be released on June 17 and follows up 2011's "I'm With You".
The CHILI PEPPERS performed at Columbus, Ohio's Rock On The Range festival on May 22, following singer Anthony Kiedis being stricken with an intestinal ailment that forced the group to cancel two other shows the week before. The group begins a European run next week in Switzerland.
