Stephen Cooke of TheChronicleHerald.ca reports: PRIDE TIGER, formed by former members of the Canadian West Coast heavy metal outfit 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, is more about swagger and riffs than its predecessor's jackhammer rhythms and epic tales of battle, but for former 3 INCHES guitarists Bob Froese and Sunny Dhak — now with drummer/vocalist Matt Wood and bassist Mike Payette — the differences just point out there's more to hard rock than loud and fast.
"It was a pretty smooth transition, actually kind of a blur," Froese said. "It seems like we were doing the 3 INCHES OF BLOOD thing yesterday, but for me and Sunny, this is sort of what we were going for with that band, and what we always wanted to play was more melodic hard rock-influenced music.
"We just put the band together, and within a year we were signed to EMI and have just been touring ever since."
Once PRIDE TIGER's powerful shows and super-tight chops had impressed the EMI A&R reps, the trick was to capture that thick, sweaty groove on record. The band settled on recording "The Lucky Ones" in L.A. with guitar band guru Matt Hyde (SLAYER, FU MANCHU), an experience Froese describes as "super, super fun."
"Matt did an awesome job and got exactly what we wanted our record to sound like," Froese said. "He listens to a lot of the same music we do, which is a big help.
"It was probably one of the best times of my entire life, a very inspiring dude.
"Beyond the music, his personality just clicked with us, and we had so much respect for him. He's like one of those guys you meet and it immediately feels like you've been friends for years and years."
